Student Reported School Climate Measurement: Is an Overhaul Needed?

Abstract

Since the passage of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), schools have been held ever more accountable for the success of students. However, there are a number of factors besides instruction time or quality that can have an effect on student learning, including school climate. This paper examines key developmental changes that can affect middle and high school students, investigates previous school climate literature, and outlines the creation and findings of the 2007 School Climate and Environment Survey. Structural equation modeling was used to examine items for validity and reliability. Results indicate that many of the tools that are currently being used to measure school climate have become outdated as the educational environment has changed. Therefore, it is important that school climate items periodically be tested for validity and reliability. This paper also presents limitations of this study as well as directions for future research.
