Abstract

Statistical Education is necessary in several areas of knowledge, allowing a better interpretation of data presented in various contexts and instigating critical thinking in the basis of judgments and decision-making. The BNCC (Common National Curricular Base) establishes guidelines for the teaching of Statistics content, inserted in the area of Mathematics, from the beginning of elementary school so that, from an early age, students become able to develop strategies and skills through critical thinking in the face of everyday problems. At the end of 2019, the first case of COVID-19 appeared in China, and shortly afterwards, in 2020, a pandemic situation was declared. Since then, we are coming across data laid out in tables and graphs about the level of contamination, death, and recovery from COVID-19. This information also reaches children through the media, making it important to discuss the causes and consequences of the pandemic with them, including the importance of social isolation and vaccination campaigns. The focus of this work is an educational booklet entitled Learning Statistics in Times of COVID-19, which highlights the importance of statistics in combating a pandemic situation in mathematics classes in the early years of elementary school, working this theme through tables and graphs, containing real information about the contamination rate of COVID-19 and data on the vaccination campaign in Brazil. All this based on the objects of knowledge and skills present in the BNCC for the fourth and fifth year of elementary school. The validation of the educational product was succeeded by teachers, through a form containing questions based on the validation criteria of CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel). Through the answers obtained it was observed that the booklet had a great evaluation, being considered in all items, mostly as excellent. We conclude that the booklet met the proposed objective of contributing to the teaching of statistical content, providing an awareness of the theme of combating a pandemic situation.
