Is There a Conflict Between Solo Singing and Choral Singing?

In fifty years of experience making music, the author of this paper has noticed that a number of vocalists place themselves in one category: either a solo or choral singer. Some vocalists have resistance to singing in choirs and some are reluctant to sing as a soloist. These varied experiences motivated the question "Is there a conflict between choral singing and vocal singing?" The author was surprised to discover that this conflict has resulted in considerable discussion and writing. The intention of this report is to clarify the conflicts related to solo and choral singing, and then contribute a new perspective that resolves this controversy.
